Are Hurricanes Increasing?

With severe drought in Georgia and hurricanes in the gulf, I thought it might be reasonable to learn something about severe weather patterns and what we can do as responsible citizens to be prepared for a natural disaster. In this light review the resources below and then answer the following questions.

1. What conditions are necessary to produce a hurricane?
2. What governmental organization monitors severe weather?
3. Have the intensity or frequency of hurricanes changed over the past 50 years? Graph the data at the resource below and explain the results.
4. What are some of the effects of hurricanes to our society?
5. What can you do to be prepared for a disaster?

Resources:
1. Hurricanes - National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association

1. What conditions are necessary to produce a hurricane?

For a hurricane to be produced, certain circumstances must be present. These conditions include: pre-existing weather disturbance such as mild storms or friction, warm humid oceans, excessive moisture, and relatively light winds.

2. What governmental organization monitors severe weather?

The NOAA (national oceanic and atmospheric administration) monitors severe weather and is responsible for providing warning of severe weather alerts. This federal organization observes the weather conditions through satellites and weather buoys.

3. Have the intensity or frequency of hurricanes changed over the past 50 years?

Through the study of graphs such as histograms, researchers are able to that both the intensity and frequency of hurricanes fluctuate in the United States. However, the trend seems to be a decrease in frequency of hurricanes from 1851 to 2004 with unpredictable times of higher or lower frequency.

4. What are some of the effects of hurricanes to our society?

Hurricanes can be extremely catastrophic and devastating to society. Strong winds and excessive flooding cause damage to buildings and roads. Also without proper evacuation, hurricanes can cause loss of life. The large amounts of standing water left after a flood can cause infection and water-borne disease.

5. What can you do to be prepared for a disaster?

With the proper preparedness, tragedy from hurricanes and other natural disasters can be avoided. First of all it is important to plan ahead in case an emergency were to come up, have an evacuation plan and an idea of what to take along in case of evacuation. It is imperative to secure houses and boats, having storm windows and sturdy roofs. By watching alerts and updates, it is easy to be prepared for a disaster before it hits.

1) The conditions necessary to produce a hurricane are warm tropical oceans, moisture and light winds above it.
2) The governmental organization that monitors severe weather in the U.S. is the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Association
3) The intensity and frequency of hurricanes over the last fifty years has changed. Both the intensity and frequency of hurricanes striking the U.S. have gone down.
(the graph won't go here - e-mail)
This graph shows an overall decline in hurricane intensity and frequency over the past fifty years.
4) Some of the effects hurricanes have on our society are: they can displace entire regions by destroying homes and businesses, they can devastate the national economy by causing billions of dollars of damage, and cause an enormous amount of death not only to people but also to flora and fauna that were in the hurricanes path.
5) To prepare for a hurricane you can: develop a family disaster plan which includes safe locations, an out of state contact and escape routes, create a disaster supply kit which includes food, water, clothes, radio, etc, have a place to go in case of a disaster and secure your home by covering any openings that wind could enter the house such as windows.

1) Certain conditions have to be present for a hurricane to be produced. Some examples of those are light winds above the hurricane, humid oceans and more moisture than normal. Also, if there is a storm there before, it will also help with the process.

2)The governmental organization that monitors severe weather is the National Oceanographic and Also, if you put aside a bag with Atmospheric Association (NOAA). They use buoys as well as satellites to track the severe weather.

3)The frequency of the hurricanes have definitely changed over the past 50 years. There has definitely been a decrease in hurricanes from the time they were first recorded in 1851.

4)The hurricane can affect our society in a great way. It can destroy homes as well as businesses within a city. Inside the city, natural like floods can alter roads and houses by either knocking them down or flooding over them. A prime example of this is the city of New Orleans. When Katrina hit, there were several roads flooded and houses knocked down by wind. Even worse, there were dead bodies floating down the street. Hurricanes can cause loss of life in several ways. Two examples are disease from the flooded, disgusting water and from drowning.

5)There are many cautious steps that we can follow to prepare for a disaster like a hurricane. One example is watching The Weather Channel or any t.v. station for updates and to see if there is one headed your way. Also, if you just listen to what they are saying and follow all of the experts steps, you will get through safely. An escape route out of your house would also be a good idea in a case of quick action. You definitely need to have a safe house as well with some type of wind resistance. When you are in a stage of crisis, stay away from the glass because the wind will blow through it and it may pierce your skin. One thing that a city can do before any warning is build up flood gates or a barrier to hold the water out sufficiently. That was one of the downfalls to Katrina because New Orleans was not as prepared for that type of natural disaster like it should have been.

In order for a hurricane to form, there must be; a pre-existing weather disturbance such as a weak storm, warm ocean water temperatures in the tropical oceans, moisture in the atmosphere, and light winds.

One government organization that monitors severe weather is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The intensity of the hurricanes seems to have gone down over the last 50 years, as well as the overall number of them.

Hurricanes can cause massive amounts of damage to our society’s homes and businesses. Every year, hurricanes cause millions of dollars in damage to our society’s buildings and property. The winds from the hurricanes can rip houses apart and uproot trees while the floods caused by the hurricane can destroy the roads and the vegetation in the area.

In order to be prepared for hurricanes or severe weather people could watch the news for severe weather reports and then track the location of the weather front. Families could also have a safety plan for different types of emergencies that would arise from severe weather.

3. The frequency and intensity of hurricanes over the past 50 years has definately changed. From the information the NOAA has collected it appears that the frequency and intensity has decreased.

4. Hurricanes can have massive effects on our society. Each year hurricanes do millions of dollars of damages to the homes, business, and the general environment of our society. These hurricanes rip apart house and destroy cities. Not to mention the huge effects that these hurricanes have on the plants and animals of out enironment, uprooting trees and wiping out wide ares of vegetation.

5. Ways to be prepared for a severe storm are such things as having a safe location in your home that could provide you and your family with the most protection from the effects of the storm. Also a safety kit with enough supplies to last around three-five days, including things like clean water, food, blankets, and flashlights. Families also should also take advantage of our modern day technologies and follow the path of severe storms in their area on the tv, radio, or computer. This way they can have enough time to get to that safe location in their home.

In order for a hurricane to occur certain conditions must be present in order for this to happen. These conditions include warm tropical oceans, lots of moisture, and light winds above it.

The governmental organization that monitors hurricanes is called the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA).

Over the past 50 years the amount of certainly has changed. The amount of hurricanes has declined greatly over the past 50 years. This is displayed in its peak at 24 hurricanes from the 40s to a mere 12 in the 90s.

Hurricanes can cause massive amounts of damage that cost us millions of dollars every year. The force of hurricanes can tear up houses, buildings and basically anything in its path. It up roots trees, picks up large objects like cars and launches them out at buildings and people. After a hurricane they devastation left from hurricanes is huge. One family can go from having a nice house, car, and life to being homeless with almost no money or anything. Hurricanes also cause a decrease in biodiversity because it tears up many organisms habitats and niches which result in the death of many species in that area.

There is not much we can do to prevent the hurricane itself but we can be aware and ready for the next one so we can be safe and come out of it with the least amount of loss possible. One way is have an evacuation plan. Know where you could go whether it be your family, or a friend’s house. You can also know exactly what you need to bring in case of evacuation and how you are evacuating whether it be on foot, car, or other means of transportation. Another way you can prevent excessive loss during a hurricane is being aware of the weather. Watch the weather every morning to make sure no tropical storms are brewing up out in the ocean. If there are, then watch more carefully find out the track of the storm and see if you are in danger. These two things can decrease the personal devastation during a hurricane greatly.

1. What conditions are necessary to produce a hurricane?

For a hurricane to start, there must be special weather patterns. These situations are mild storms or friction, warm and humid air mainly above oceans, and light winds

2. What governmental organization monitors severe weather?

The NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric administration) watches these weather patterns with satellites and buoys. The NOAA weather and makes sure that they warn everyone around the area in danger with sufficient weather alerts.

3. Have the intensity or frequency of hurricanes changed over the past 50 years?

With studying the different weather patterns from the past years, people have these large storms have varied with how many storms a year and how intense each hurricane is. It is observed that there has been less hurricanes in the past 50 years.

4. What are some of the effects of hurricanes to our society?

Hurricanes have a large effect on our society. With heavy rains and strong winds, hurricanes can destroy entire cities and displace many people and leave a lot homeless. Like observed with Hurricane Katrina, it can take many years for the whole cities to recover from a large hit. Also with these abandoned cities, there is an increase with crime and disease. The flood water has no where to go, so the streets, houses, buildings are filled with water infected with diseases and toxic water from sewers, bathhouses, mud, old food and other dangerous factors.

5. What can you do to be prepared for a disaster?

It is difficult to fully prepare for a disaster as large as a hurricane. Watching alerts and the news around bad weather will help. Of course keeping an evacuation plan should help keep your family and friends safe, but no one can protect their house from flooding. If it is a smaller hurricane, having strong windows and walls are safer, and getting rid of old trees in your yard. These dead trees are weak and easily get pulled out from the strong winds and possibly harming your house.
